Arachnorchis clavigera - Plain-lip Spider

Back

When I found this orchid it was my lucky day!  I actually observed the flower being pollinated.  See below:

These photos were taken at Anglesea.  Only a few were found as these form loose colonies (even a few scattered flowers) and are hard to locate due to the dull colouration of the flowers.

When searching for orchids it is a good idea to retrace your steps at times, as seeing the same area from the reverse direction often shows flowers that you missed, mainly I feel, due to the way the Sun hits the plants.

Details (Vic):

Flowering:  Flowering August - January, mainly September to November

Size: Up to 40cm tall,  flowers -  1 or 2 to 40mm across.  Loose colonies.

Position:  Scattered widely across Victoria, from coast to mountainous areas.  Well drained soils in heathland, open forest and woodland.

Endemic, Secure

Previously:  Caladenia clavigera

Pollination in progress, the Wasp flies in and is trapped for a short time.  It frees itself and flies off, landing on some bark on the ground; heavy with pollen.
