Walking up a track we noted a huge granite boulder on our left.  Checking it out we found some 20 plants in bud with flowers due soon.  Looking nearby we saw more plants on the ground and these ones were flowering well.  Lucky for us as we would have had to come back in a couple of weeks time for the boulder flowers!

Photographed at Wilson's Promontory.

Details (Vic):

Flowering:  Flowering June - September, mainly July to August.

Size: Flower stem to 25cm,  flower - 1- 8, to 15mm across.

Location:  Found generally in coastal areas in open forests and heathy woodlands.  Found on and around granite boulders and in leaf litter and humus rich sandy soils.

Endemic, Vulnerable.

Orchids are interesting - this one at one stage was growing on top of a large granite boulder, some 2m in diameter, along with another 20 or so, mates.  At some stage it fell (or was it pushed!) over exposing the root system.  In looking at the location there is just enough dirt/leaf litter etc to cover the bulb as it grows.   It was replanted in the ground nearby, where others were also growing.  Hopefully it will live to flower again.
