We had searched our target area for 3 hours when we finally found a bud! Too early, but we had least found one, we can always come back in a few weeks to get the flower (we thought). Christmas came and went and weren't we busy with the family.

Some people thought that these orchids had not flowered this year.  Looking at other areas the season did seem early.

When we did finally get back, we thought they would be in full bloom.  We were wrong, the plant we found was almost passed it! Only one half reasonable flower was left to photograph - we did!

Next year we will be a bit better organised.

We looked around again but still no other flowers/buds so in general they did not flower well this year (Dec 2005).

Photographed in North-Eastern Victoria.

Details (Vic):

Flowering:  Flowering December to February, mainly January.

Size: Up to 80cm tall,  flowers -  usually 8 to 25, to 45mm across.

Location: Found only in the East and North-eastern areas of Victoria.  Found on dry rocky slopes and ridges, often with black cypress pines. Loose colonies.

Endemic, Endangered (less than 200 individual plants).
