Down South:
comprises the south west coast line and takes in the attractions of the Great Ocean Road & the Otway Ranges. |
|
There are many wonderful waterfalls with in the Otways National Park, this is one of them, the lovely Mariners Falls which is just a short drive out of Apollo Bay. The dog is not ours but a farmers who lives near the start of the walk to the falls, the dog was kind enough to take us there and amused us with a game of fetch, we tossed sticks, the dog brought them back for us. . |
|
| Mait's rest is one of the few developed walks available to
see the real rain forest, Melba gully is another, but I liked this walk the best. The first Park ranger is supposed to have rested in this area on his rounds, I'm not sure about that but it is a place that I could certainly sit and rest at. The ferns and the "big" trees that once abounded everywhere here, were great. Alas we cut most of them down in the past when there were lots, only to find we have no more! This place is worth sometime at. |
|
| The bird life all through this area is wonderful, I cheated
here and took this photo while having lunch. It's a Crimson Rosella, adult, they are all over Victoria and can be readily seen. |
|
| The 12 Apostles are a very interesting series of sandstone rock formations carved out of the coastline by wind & sea over time. No matter how hard you look you can only ever see a few at the one time, but they tell me there really is 12 of the rocks out there! | |
| This is Lockard Gorge, again created by the wind and sea. It's called Lockard because an early sailing (circa 1850) was shipwrecked just outside the heads, only 2 survived the wreck and they were found in this gorge. Which is hard to imagine as the entrance has a very nasty rip. This area is just down from the Apostles and both should be seen . | |

|
The Grotto, Go and look its magical. |
In The area of the 12 Apostles there are many formations like the one above, all trying to outdo each other. |
| This is "London Bridge", in the old days, some 7
years ago the island was connected to the mainland by a rock bridge, so the name!
Then one day it collapsed, leaving only the island part left. I had spend many a
visit to this area as a kid and later on walking out across the "bridge" to the
end and wondering when it would fall, not ever really thinking it would, but then it
did. Allot like life in many ways. |
|
| The photo was taken on a cold & wet day at Mt. Eceles an extinct volcano. One thing I spotted was this lovely Koala. The area is lovely with a good short walk around the Volcano's crater, with of course an interesting view from the highest point and interesting Lava Tube Cave. The area abounds with bird life, as well as Koala's. | |
| Crater walk, top shelf or lower deck, take your choice.
